The Feria de Las Flores, or the Flower Festival, in Medellin is one of the most anticipated and beloved events in all of Colombia. This annual festival, which takes place in the city of Medellin in the month of August, is a celebration of the region’s rich cultural heritage and the vibrant beauty of its flowers. The first Feria de Las Flores was celebrated in 1957, and since then, it has become a symbol of unity, pride, and joy for the people of Medellin.
Throughout the week-long celebration, the city is adorned with breathtaking flower displays, showcasing the diversity and abundance of Colombia’s flowers. The main attraction of the festival is the famous Flower Parade, where hundreds of silleteros, or flower carriers, showcase their stunning floral arrangements on their backs. These silleteros are an essential part of the festival, as they represent the hardworking farmers and their traditional way of carrying flowers from the countryside to the city.
Aside from the parade, there are also various cultural events and activities that take place during the Feria de Las Flores. The Plaza de las Flores, or the Flower Plaza, is a popular spot for locals and tourists to gather and enjoy live music, dance performances, and traditional food. The festival also includes a classic car parade, horse shows, and a gastronomic fair, where visitors can taste a variety of traditional Colombian dishes.
